Brief History of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology

The Department of Veterinary Microbiology was created in April, 2012 following several years of demand for the expansion of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine into more distinct specialization Departments. The new Department had been a unit in the former Department of Veterinary Pathology and Microbiology. Responsibilities of the Department include teaching core Veterinary Microbiology subjects for Veterinary students; research in the fields of Bacteriology, Mycology, Immunology and Virology as they apply to Veterinary Medical Veterinary and providing diagnostic services as community service. Relevant consultancy services and products quality/safety assessment could be provided by the Department on request. The Department is also involved with residency training in Microbiology for Membership and Fellowship of the College of Veterinary Surgeons Nigeria. The immediate plans of the Department are to upgrade laboratory/teaching facilities and establish linkages for collaborative research in the area of molecular characterization of indigenous pathogens, vaccine development and antimicrobial resistance.
